Indivisible CA50 announces its endorsement of Ammar Campa-Najjar for Congress. After hundreds of voters cast their ballots, Campa-Najjar exceeded the threshold of two-thirds of the vote to win the endorsement.

“Indivisible CA50 is proud to endorse Ammar Campa-Najjar to be our champion to challenge Duncan Hunter in 2018,” said Kathy Steel of San Marcos, a leader of Indivisible CA50. “Hunter is so out of touch with the needs of his district that he just voted to raise our taxes and take our healthcare. He is also out of touch with the values of our district. Hunter stole money from his campaign to buy videogames and luxury vacations, and then lied about it, blaming his wife and son. We need a congressman with integrity who understands the struggles of everyday people, not a privileged thief who inherited the seat from his father. I am confident that Ammar Campa-Najjar will represent the needs of District 50 and the values of its people.”

Indivisible CA50 is a coalition of Indivisible members from across San Diego County who are determined to defeat Rep. Duncan Hunter and flip Congress in 2018. In-person votes were cast in Ramona, Escondido, Bonsall, San Marcos, La Mesa, El Cajon and Temecula. Other candidates on the ballot included Josh Butner, Patrick Malloy and Pete Beauregard. Mr. Beauregard withdrew his name during the three-week voting process and endorsed Mr. Campa-Najjar.

“Of all the endorsements I have received to date, Indivisible CA50’s is truly unique,” said Ammar Campa-Najjar. “It represents the enthusiasm of hundreds of progressive grassroots activists, not only in District 50 but across the region. In addition to the sweeping endorsements the Campa campaign has received from traditional Democratic clubs and issue groups, Indivisible CA50’s support brings new activists to 2018, with fresh energy, to work shoulder to shoulder with my campaign. With the overwhelming support of Indivisible CA50, I can feel the wind at my back as I aim to earn the California Democratic Party’s endorsement. Hunter’s days are numbered and receiving the full backing of our district’s most active Indivisible members is a dream come true.”

“Indivisible CA-50 is the first Indivisible group in California to endorse a congressional candidate for 2018,” said Maria Urbina, Indivisible Political Director in Washington, DC. “When we debuted the Indivisible435 program in November, we published electoral guides to support groups in running their own process. We’re so happy to see groups in District 50 using that endorsement guide and their own local power to alter the political landscape and flip control of Congress in 2018. We must unseat incumbent Republicans like Rep. Duncan Hunter to take control of Congress and this early endorsement promises that the grassroots strength of Indivisible will be a key factor in these races.”

“Hundreds of Indivisible CA50 members pledge to work our hearts out to elect Campa-Najjar,” added Steel. “We will follow the Indivisible playbook for the 2017 Virginia and Alabama elections and focus on voter registration, targeting and high voter turnout. Campa-Najjar will appeal to District 50 voters who’ve been forgotten by the Hunters for more than a generation. We will work hard to reach every one of them.”

Indivisible CA50 will hold an endorsement rally and election season kickoff with Ammar Campa-Najjar on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 5 PM in San Marcos.
